The idea of a concert special did not exactly light up Ed Sheeran\u2019s mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery time it was pitched to me, I just wasn\u2019t excited,\u201d says the English singer and songwriter who has spent the past decade or so among the world\u2019s top touring acts. \u201c\u2018We could do this theatre and this town and this\u2026\u2019 \u2013 it was like, \u2018I\u2019ve seen that before.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

But then Sheeran got a call from Ben Winston, the Emmy-winning producer and director known for his role overseeing the Grammy Awards and as a creator of James Corden\u2019s \u201cCarpool Karaoke\u201d series.<\/p>\n

Actually, it was an email, Winston points out. \u201cYou can\u2019t call Ed because he doesn\u2019t have a phone,\u201d he says. \u201cYou have to email him and hope he FaceTimes you back from his iPad.\u201d<\/p>\n

Winston\u2019s pitch earlier this year was simple but intriguing: what if they took the one-shot approach that helped make Netflix\u2019s Adolescence<\/em><\/span> such a sensation and used it to film a performance by Sheeran \u2013 not simply onstage but as he goes on a journey somewhere? And instead of getting a director \u201ckind of like the guy who shot Adolescence<\/em>\u201d, as Winston recalls putting it, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we just ask the guy who shot Adolescence<\/em>?\u201d<\/div>\n

Sheeran liked the idea; so did Philip Barantini, who won two Emmys in September for directing that acclaimed miniseries about a 13-year-old boy accused of killing a female classmate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
