{"id":13748,"date":"2025-11-23T01:34:35","date_gmt":"2025-11-22T17:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=13748"},"modified":"2025-11-23T01:34:35","modified_gmt":"2025-11-22T17:34:35","slug":"golden-horse-chang-chen-edges-out-singapores-richie-koh-to-win-best-actor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=13748","title":{"rendered":"Golden Horse: Chang Chen edges out Singapore\u2019s Richie Koh to win Best Actor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\"><span class=\"dateline\">TAIPEI <\/span>\u2013 <!-- -->Veteran Taiwanese actor Chang Chen edged out four other contenders, including Singapore\u2019s Richie Koh, to take home the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actor on Nov 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The 49-year-old won the prestigious award for the film Lucky Lu, in which he plays a food delivery rider in New York who discovers that his e-bike has been stolen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Accepting the award onstage, Chang thanked his actor father Chang Kuo-chu, whom he credited for introducing him to the world of cinema.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cHe made me believe in films and love films since I made my acting debut at the age of 13. So I would like to dedicate (this award) to all of you who love films&#8230;\u00a0 I hope we can keep going and keep loving films together,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The win marks Chang\u2019s second Golden Horse in the same category, after he previously took home the trophy for playing a cancer-stricken prosecutor in the mystery crime drama The Soul (2021).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But while home-grown actor Koh, 32, ended up going home empty-handed, the rising star told The Straits Times after the ceremony at Taipei Music Center: \u201cOf course I had hoped to go onstage, and bring some of this great honour back home. But even though we didn\u2019t manage to do it this time, I believe we\u2019ll be able to do so the next time with persistent efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAlso, even though I didn\u2019t win an award, I gained something else. I managed to take a photo with (Taiwanese) director Lee Ang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Koh had been nominated for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/life\/entertainment\/actor-richie-koh-on-the-hardest-part-of-playing-a-drag-queen-in-upcoming-film-a-good-child?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">moving performance as a drag queen<\/p>\n<p><\/a> in the film A Good Child, which is based on the life of Singaporean full-time drag queen Sammi Zhen. Koh reportedly took lessons from an acting coach to master the feminine mannerisms required of the role. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The film also missed out on the other award it was nominated for \u2013 Best Make-up and Costume Design.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Another Singaporean, Los Angeles-based film-maker Tan Siyou, was nominated for Best New Director for her debut feature Amoeba, but she did not win either. The award went instead to Lucky Lu\u2019s Canadian director Lloyd Lee Choi.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The annual awards show, which marked its 62nd edition this year, is often dubbed the \u201cOscars of Chinese-language cinema\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Chinese actress Fan Bingbing was named Best Leading Actress for her portrayal of a widowed farmer and ritual healer in the Malaysian film Mother Bhumi. She was the front-runner going in, for what critics deemed a breakthrough performance that was a contrast to her typically glamorous roles.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The film also marked a significant comeback for Fan, who had once been one of China\u2019s biggest stars before her fall from grace <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/life\/entertainment\/china-s-high-profile-celebrities-fined-for-tax-evasion?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">following a tax evasion scandal in 2018<\/p>\n<p><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While the 44-year-old did not attend the awards ceremony, she delivered her acceptance speech over the phone after she was dialled in onstage by the film\u2019s director, Chong Keat Aun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Between audible sobs, she said: \u201cWhen the director discussed the role with me, he asked, \u2018Are you willing to let me destroy your face?\u2019 I remember answering without hesitation, \u2018Fan Bingbing will go all the way\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Hong Kong film-maker Jun Li was named Best Director for the film Queerpanorama, which is centred on the life of a nameless young gay man.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Several awards of the night, including the biggest and final prize \u2013 Best Narrative Feature \u2013 went to A Foggy Tale, a movie set during Taiwan\u2019s White Terror political purges of the 1950s. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\"
