SINGAPORE \u2013 Seven motorists were hauled to court on Nov 19 for driving without reasonable consideration, causing hurt or grievous hurt to others.<\/p>\n
Eight people were injured \u2013 three cyclists, three motorcyclists, one pillion rider and one pedestrian. <\/p>\n
This comes as traffic accidents resulting in injuries and fatalities continue to rise. <\/p>\n
From January to September, there were 5,765 cases, up from 5,368 in the same period in 2024. <\/p>\n
On Nov 19, Ting Ing Seng, 68, was fined $4,000 and disqualified from holding all classes of driving licences for five years after he admitted that his vehicle had collided with a motorcycle on Aug 28, 2024. <\/p>\n
Ting had made a right turn from a service road along Hougang Avenue 10 but failed to notice the motorcycle that was travelling straight with the right of way. <\/p>\n
The collision resulted in the 51-year-old victim suffering a fracture on his shin. <\/p>\n
In another case, Dermadi Adi, 57, was fined $3,200 and disqualified from holding all classes of driving licences for five years. <\/p>\n
Dermadi was driving along Bedok North Road on Jan 17 when he failed to exercise due care while making a discretionary right turn. <\/p>\n
His vehicle hit a 43-year-old cyclist at the pedestrian crossing. The court heard that Dermadi had previously received three compounded offences for failing to conform with red light signals in 2019.<\/p>\n
In a separate case, Subandi Haji Mohari, 63, was handed two charges. His vehicle was said to have collided with a motorcycle on the Bukit Timah Expressway on July 18 after he failed to keep a lookout when changing lanes. <\/p>\n
The impact left both the motorcyclist, 42, and the pillion rider, 41, with injuries. <\/p>\n
Another man, Augustine Ow Xinying, 43, faces one charge. He is accused of driving without due care and attention after his vehicle hit a woman at the junction of Commonwealth Avenue West on Jan 18.<\/p>\n
The 51-year-old woman was making her way across the road at a signalised crossing with the green man in her favour. <\/p>\n
Ow will return to court on Dec 30. <\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Tay Puay Yeong, 52, was charged after his vehicle crashed into a motorcyclist on April 17 along Woodlands Drive 14. <\/p>\n
Tay is accused of failing to exercise reasonable care while he was making a discretionary right turn at a non-signalised junction. <\/p>\n
The court heard that Tay was convicted in 2001 for inconsiderate driving. His case will be heard again on Dec 18. <\/p>\n
In another case, Aileen Loke Wai Leng, 45, was charged with driving without reasonable consideration for other road users after failing to give way to a cyclist. <\/p>\n
Her vehicle struck the cyclist on Nov 20, 2024, at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Street 43 and Ang Mo Kio Avenue 3 after she failed to spot the cyclist while making a left turn. <\/p>\n
She will return to court on Jan 12, 2026. <\/p>\n
Another woman, Stephanie Priscilla Sivan, 23, was handed one charge after she was accused of failing to keep a proper lookout while driving, which resulted in an accident causing grievous hurt. <\/p>\n
It happened on May 26 when she was making a right turn out of a carpark service road near Tampines Central 8, resulting in a collision with a cyclist, 33. <\/p>\n
Her case will be mentioned again on Jan 5, 2026. <\/p>\n
In a Nov 18 statement, the Traffic Police reiterated that they take a serious view of those who endanger the safety of road users. <\/p>\n
\u201cAll motorists are urged to abide by traffic laws to keep our roads safe for everyone. The Traffic Police will continue to take firm action against errant motorists,\u201d they said. <\/p>\n
Those convicted of driving without due care or reasonable consideration causing grievous hurt can be fined up to $5,000, jailed for up to two years, or both. <\/p>\n
Repeat offenders can face up to double the penalties. <\/p>\n
In addition, offenders will face disqualification from driving all classes of vehicles. <\/p>\n
Those found guilty of driving without due care or reasonable consideration causing hurt can be fined up to $2,500, jailed for up to a year, or both. Repeat offenders can face up to double the penalties. <\/p>\n
Offenders convicted for this charge can also be disqualified from driving. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n
