{"id":12349,"date":"2025-11-17T20:53:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-17T12:53:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=12349"},"modified":"2025-11-17T20:53:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-17T12:53:32","slug":"thundery-showers-expected-over-parts-of-singapore-in-second-half-of-november","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=12349","title":{"rendered":"Thundery showers expected over parts of Singapore in second half of November"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE <!-- -->\u2013 <!-- -->Those heading out in the last two weeks of November should keep their umbrellas handy as thundery showers are expected over parts of Singapore on most afternoons, said the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS). <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In its fortnightly weather advisory on Nov 17,<!-- --> <!-- -->the MSS said that the showers may extend into the evening on a few of these days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Sumatra squalls may also bring widespread thundery showers and gusty winds on a few mornings during this period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The total rainfall for the second fortnight of November is forecast to be above average over most parts of the island.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Daily maximum temperatures are likely to range between 32 deg C and 33 deg C on most days but may reach around 34 deg C on a few days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The north-east monsoon is expected to set in around end-November, bringing with it stronger winds blowing from the cool Northern Hemisphere towards the Equator.<!-- --> <!-- -->The season typically extends to March.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In its review on weather conditions in the first half of November, MSS said that inter-monsoon conditions over the island and the surrounding region brought light and variable winds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">There were thundery showers in the afternoon on most days.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But on a few days, Singapore saw widespread thundery showers and gusty winds because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/st-explains-what-s-a-sumatra-squall?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Sumatra squalls<\/p>\n<p><\/a> \u2013 a common and vigorous line of thunderstorms travelling rapidly towards the South China Sea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Nov 16, widespread moderate to heavy thundery showers fell over many parts of the island in the late morning and afternoon.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The highest rainfall recorded for the first half of November \u2013 101.8mm \u2013 was recorded around Pulau Semakau on that day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Meanwhile, the daily maximum temperatures during that fortnight were over 33 deg C on most days.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On Nov 1, the highest daily temperature of 36 deg C was recorded in Newton. This was the highest temperature ever recorded in November since temperature records started in 1<!-- -->929.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<figure class=\"portrait inline-media-wrapper\" style=\"--aspect-article-portrait:960 \/ 1344\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/48dbc0ca6b4508252854a82bff8011836f212fb56586cf59c482d27f7c479de7?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: article-portrait object-contain mobile:w-auto tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It exceeded the previous record of 35.8 deg C on Nov 3, 2023, in Newton and on Nov 18, 2019, in Admiralty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Most parts of Singapore also saw below-average rainfall in the first half of November.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">For instance, the area around Jurong registered rainfall of 64 per cent below average, while the area around Changi registered rainfall of 49 per cent above average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Ahead of the year-end rainy season, national water agency PUB on Nov 17 said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/flood-alerts-on-google-maps-and-more-sensors-among-plans-to-improve-flash-flood-warnings-pub?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">more than 600 water level sensors will be installed islandwide<\/p>\n<p><\/a> by 2028\u00a0to improve\u00a0flood monitoring in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Other measures in the works include integrating flood alerts on Google Maps and using mobile
