However, some filmmakers were still experimenting with the genre.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">We look at three outliers: a surreal science fiction romance, a love story that morphs into a fantasy and a film about a presumed incestuous relationship.<\/p>\n<h3 type=\"h3\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"eh0yk8h0 css-17x7qa9 e1pqa4re1\">Saviour of the Soul (1991)<\/h3>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">This postmodern sci-fi romance, loosely based on the popular Japanese manga <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">City Hunter<\/em>, is a thoroughbred romance at its core.<\/p>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">Set in a futuristic-looking Hong Kong, <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Saviour of the Soul<\/em> stars <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Andy Lau Tak-wah<\/span> as the sword-wielding assassin Ching, who falls for one of two identical sisters, both played by <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Anita Mui Yim-fong<\/span>.<\/div>\n<div datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1xdhyk6 ec74h0k0\">When sister one\u2019s fianc\u00e9 (Kenny Bee) kills a powerful criminal, his acolyte Silver Fox (a hammy <span data-qa=\"Component-Text\" class=\"css-0 ef9u0v00\">Aaron Kwok Fu-shing<\/span>) exacts his revenge.<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Sister one disappears, and the lovelorn Ching searches for her, much to the chagrin of sister two.
