SINGAPORE \u2013 Jordan\u2019s King Abdullah II, during a two-day visit to Singapore, called on President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and both leaders reaffirmed the longstanding and warm ties between the two nations. <\/p>\n
In a Nov 14 statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said King Abdullah also met Prime Minister Lawrence Wong. The King was on a working visit to Singapore on Nov 13 and 14.<\/p>\n
During the visit, the King and President Tharman discussed issues relating to cooperation in education, trade and investment, developments in Gaza and the Middle East peace process.<\/p>\n
Jordan was one of four countries that sponsored Singapore\u2019s membership in the UN in 1965. Both countries have developed a multi-faceted partnership over the years, MFA said. <\/p>\n
PM Wong, who is also Finance Minister, hosted lunch in King Abdullah\u2019s honour. <\/p>\n
He thanked the King for supporting the welfare of Singaporean students in Jordan. <\/p>\n
Jordan has partnered with the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore, or Muis, for a postgraduate certificate in Islam in Contemporary Societies, and the Singapore College of Islamic Studies. <\/p>\n PM Wong (right), who is also Finance Minister, hosted lunch in King Abdullah\u2019s honour.<\/p>\n PHOTO: MDDI<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n MFA said that as multi-religious societies, both countries share a common interest in promoting inter-faith harmony and understanding.<\/p>\n The King and PM Wong also discussed ways to expand bilateral cooperation in fields such as education, vocational training, investment promotion and green energy.<\/p>\n Discussing the developments in the Middle East, PM Wong expressed his appreciation for Jordan\u2019s facilitation of Singapore\u2019s humanitarian assistance for civilians in Gaza. This includes Singapore\u2019s recent contribution of <\/p>\n prosthetic supplies for about 100 Palestinian amputees<\/p>\n <\/a>.<\/p>\n MFA said: \u201cSingapore will continue to work with regional partners, including Jordan, to support international efforts for the reconstruction needs of Gaza after a permanent ceasefire has been reached.\u201d <\/p>\n PM Wong agreed that in the long term, it will be vital to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the interest of regional peace and stability. <\/p>\n MFA said: \u201cSingapore believes that a negotiated two-state solution, consistent with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, is the only viable pathway to achieving a comprehensive, just and durable solution to the conflict.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/picture><\/div>
