SINGAPORE: As fewer people head to traditional movie screenings, some cinema operators in Singapore are finding a new and growing revenue stream \u2013 private hall bookings and alternative content events.<\/p>\n
According to the country\u2019s largest cinema chain Golden Village (GV), its total bookings for hall rentals and special screenings have doubled compared to\u00a0pre-pandemic levels.<\/p>\n
While most of the bookings are from corporate clients, a GV spokesperson said it has \u201cseen a notable rise in fan and community-led events\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201c(This is) a trend driven by audiences seeking more immersive, cinematic settings,\u201d the spokesperson added.<\/p>\n
GV also reported that admissions for non-traditional cinema content \u2013 like live viewing events and virtual reality concerts \u2013 were up 86 per cent this year compared with 2024, while private hall rental bookings also increased.<\/p>\n
Industry observers said this shift points to a larger transformation in what cinemas do.<\/p>\n
With streaming platforms and home-viewing widely available, the traditional cinema model has been under pressure.<\/p>\n
Several players \u2013 most notably Cathay Cineplexes, one of Singapore\u2019s oldest cinema chains \u2013 have shut down in recent years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
