On Halloween weekend, Tanjong Pagar Distripark once again became the city\u2019s unofficial HQ for print lovers as the Singapore Art Book Fair (SGABF) returned for its 11th edition \u2014 and its biggest one yet. Spanning two<\/i> venues (the New Art Museum Singapore and Whitestone Gallery), the fair brought together over 120 artists, designers, and zinemakers from around the world, including local favourites Holycrap.sg, Atelier Hoko, Shrub, and Knuckles & Notch.<\/p>\n

Beyond flipping through stacks of beautiful books and zines, visitors also got hands-on at bookbinding and printmaking workshops, while the Thing Books Residency Showcase<\/i> offered a rare glimpse into how ideas evolve from concept to print. From indie collectors to design students, everyone showed up for the love of print \u2014 and our F Zine People Cam<\/i> was there to capture some of the fair\u2019s most stylish attendees.<\/p>\n

The story behind his fit:<\/b> \u201cIt was Halloween and my partner wanted us to dress as insects, so I tried my best to look like a spider. I\u2019ve since been made aware that spiders are actually arachnids.\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought him to SGABF:<\/b> \u201cMy beautiful girlfriend is in the arts and wanted me to come check it out with her. It was my first time, and it was a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n

What he got at the fair:<\/b> \u201cI got a Magic Carrot (a mini paper cutter) from Variegated because I find myself having to cut things quite often. It\u2019s hanging from my waist now! I also got some writing and craft papers because I like to write letters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her fit:<\/b> \u201cThat day I was wearing a red polka-dot silk dress paired with black high boots and a white fur bag. I wanted to go for something a little more stylised and colourful \u2014 definitely not my usual \u2014 but it felt right for the day. The boots are from Ssalty Thrifts (@ssaltythrifts), and the dress was a lucky find at one of the booths (@kedai.dhoby.shanghai) at Resurrack market (@resurrack).\u201d<\/p>\n

The story behind her fit: <\/b>\u201cThe electric red and playful polka dots of the dress immediately caught my eye \u2014 I knew I had to grab it before anyone else did. Coincidentally, it was around Halloween, and I thought the colours gave off a funny ladybird energy. So I decided to just lean into it \u2014 a funky take on my inner ladybird moment.\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought her to SGABF:<\/b> \u201cThe fair always feels like the place where artists from all corners come together to share what they love. I came to support my friends who were exhibiting, but also to check out what the overseas publishers had brought this year. It\u2019s honestly such a perfect way to feel immersed in art and community all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she got from the fair:<\/b> \u201cI picked up a CAPTCHA-encrypted keychain by the artist duo Zeharn and Zeherng (@zeharn_zeherng). I was immediately drawn to it \u2014 both for the bold visuals and the concept. Their work plays with the idea of verifying what it means to be human, this sort of tension between recognition and alienation in the digital space. It\u2019s such a sharp, fascinating commentary, and I loved how they made something so mundanely embedded in our lives feel fun and tangible.\u201d<\/p>\n

His fit:<\/b> \u201cI was wearing a limited-edition Back to the Future<\/i> shirt that I got in Singapore, a Wong Kar-Wai cap from SCRT in London, a Helmut Lang archive belt, a special one-of-a-kind pair of shorts made by my mum (Emine Ekmen), and a pair of very hard-to-find Martine Rose x Nike sneakers I picked up in New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

The story behind his fit:<\/b> \u201cI often find myself going straight from the airport to an art space. That day, I had a lecture to give, but it was also really hot outside. So I dressed in a way that felt both travel-ready and presentable for a public event.\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought him to SGABF:<\/b> I was invited to take part in the ongoing Singapore Biennale<\/b><\/a>, and I was happy to find out the Singapore Art Book Fair was happening at the same time (they\u2019re both taking place in the same building) \u2014 especially since my friends from Istanbul and Mexico City were participating too. I love art book fairs and alternative publications; they always have such great energy.\u201d<\/p>\n

What he got at the fair:<\/b> \u201cI got a cap from the Mexican collective RRD (Red de Reproduccion y Distribucion)<\/b><\/a> from Mexico. I really like the vibe of that collective \u2014 they\u2019ve got a great project that\u2019s also part of the Singapore Biennale (the work is located in the cafe within Singapore Art Musuem).\u201d<\/p>\n

Her fit: \u201cThe skeleton hand hair clips are from the Halloween section of a fancy dress shop. I got the two sword pendants from a market, and the spiked bracelets one from various shops… the teal walking boots were found under a hedge on the side of the road in Manchester (don\u2019t worry, I\u2019ve cleaned and repaired them). As for the black shirt with red, white, and blue skulls and a plaid skirt, I got these from the London cat shelter charity shop I used to work at, so I got first dibs on all the stock.\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought her to the fair:<\/b> \u201c\u201dOne friend wanted to buy The Other Vegetable Book<\/i> that was being sold at the event, while another friend works at the fair and told me to come by to see them and the gallery. I also wanted to check out different artists\u2019 styles and hear more about their practices \u2014 plus, having so much physical media to explore in one place is pretty rare, so I would\u2019ve gone anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she got at the fair: <\/b>\u201cA postcard featuring 17 cute creatures \u2014 Stitches, Beauty, Happy, Ponyo, Green Mushroom, and more \u2014 each with their own unique personality. I got it because it was such good value for just one or two dollars, from the maker @suzixingu. <\/i>I also got a tag pendant from @monstore featuring a black cat on fire, with red horns and a pentagram on its forehead that says \u201ccat will bless you\u201d. I\u2019m turning it into a necklace because I love the idea of receiving blessings (and a bit of hexing power) from a lucky black cat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her fit:<\/b> \u201cThat day, I was wearing a bandana from @kiiidsclub in Chongqing, China, a Logo Removal Tee by @niamhgalea from Sydney, and a pair of trousers from Sans & Sans. My bag was the Club crossbody from Arcs, my socks were from Uniqlo, and I had on my Maipo Explorer shoes from Merrell.\u201d<\/p>\n

The story behind her fit:<\/b> \u201cI\u2019ve always been a fun little shirt-and-big-pants kind of person! I love wearing colours and feel most like myself when I\u2019m in my favourites \u2014 green and purple. I started wearing bandanas this year and found them to be such a fun, easy way to add personality to an outfit (and they\u2019re perfect for bad hair days too). I picked up hiking this year, so I got these shoes for that, and they\u2019re super comfy for long walks. Most importantly, I\u2019ve found so much value in buying from small businesses \u2014 you get unique pieces with stories behind them, and it feels good knowing you\u2019re supporting independent creators.<\/p>\n

What brought her to the fair:<\/b> \u201cI\u2019ve been going since around 2014 \u2014 I think the first time might\u2019ve been a school art trip \u2014 and it\u2019s something I look forward to every year. I really believe it\u2019s important, now more than ever, to support events like this, both with our attention and money (if we can), so the local art scene can continue to thrive… I\u2019m a big believer in creating the reality you want to live in \u2014 if you feel like Singapore lacks arts, culture, or third spaces, then seek them out! Be part of the narrative in whatever way you can… This year felt extra special because my friends were boothing (shoutout @tofuhouse.films and @radioriotgrrrl) and it was so nice seeing them. I think artists are doing the real work \u2014 sacrificing sleep, pooling resources, sharing their art, and building community wherever they go. Conversations with them always remind me that there are alternative ways to live outside of the capitalist rat race.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she got at the fair:<\/b> \u201cI got a hand-bound calendar from Groundtable (the dates were typed on a typewriter!), a photo print on cloth from Sore Sore\u2019s Shelf, and a zine from FLMK Artist Book Association. The artist from Groundtable told me she made the calendar to document her time living in Germany for a year. She also displayed a long scroll of receipt paper filled with things she\u2019d bought and stories attached to them. It really resonated with me because I used to collect receipts when I was younger and label them with who I was with and what we did \u2014 it felt like archiving little moments of my life. The zine from FLMK was bound with cloth and featured wax prints of leaves and branches \u2014 it reminded me of what I see while hiking, and I loved how tactile it felt.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her fit:<\/b> \u201cThat day, I was wearing a top from Cotton On, a wrap skirt from The Retro Factory \u2014 a flea market in Katong \u2014 made by a lady who creates batik products, and a pair of shoes from GU. It was honestly a pretty casual, last-minute outfit! I usually wear a lot of black and greyscale clothes that match my art, but I decided to go for more colour and pattern this time to match the booth I was manning \u2014 and to stay comfy too. I was helping out at a booth called Hotpot Blues, which was started by my friends, and I also had a few of my own works on display there.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she got at the fair:<\/b> \u201cI picked up some fabric prints from Soresore, fabric patches from Tofu House, a print from FAHFDR, and a bunch of cute riso stickers and pins from Twoinrow.print. My room walls are still pretty blank, so I wanted to add some art for decoration \u2014 I kind of want my room to feel like a mini gallery, with rotating works by different artists. I\u2019m also planning to sew the fabric patches onto a T-shirt and blazer!\u201d<\/p>\n

The story behind her fit:<\/b> \u201cHonestly, I was dressing for comfort since I thought I\u2019d be walking from the MRT station to the venue, lol. Most of my clothes are black, and I like adding a pop of red \u2014 it\u2019s my favourite colour and my go-to accent when I\u2019m putting an outfit together.\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought her to SGABF: \u201cI came to the Singapore Art Book Fair hoping to find prints for my new place. I didn\u2019t end up finding any that really resonated with me, but I did pick up a few other bits \u2014 some zines, stickers and a book.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she got at the fair:<\/b> \u201cOne of my favourite finds was a zine called Devotion<\/i> by @gracehong.party \u2014 I really like works that explore themes of stigma and shame surrounding sexuality. I also got a portrait of myself as a vegetable by @meng.juice\u2026 just because it was hilarious.\u201d<\/p>\n

Honestly, I wish I could say I\u2019d thought through my outfit with some big inspiration, but the truth is I just knew I wanted to wear the black headband, so I mixed and matched pieces I already had.\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought her to SGABF:<\/b> \u201cIt was my first time at the fair! I\u2019d heard about it from a friend who introduced me to zines, and I wanted to soak in the creativity and passion of everyone there.\u201d<\/p>\n

What she got at the fair:<\/b> \u201cI mainly picked up posters and postcards, but one in particular caught my eye \u2014 a poster by a Vietnamese artist (I can\u2019t remember their name) that highlighted the Palestinian cause. It really made me feel seen.\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted a pop of colour and a few layers, even on a hot day, so I chose light pieces that wouldn\u2019t feel heavy while layering \u2014 plus, it had to work for Baybeats right after the Book Fair!\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought her to SGABF: \u201cMy husband and I haven\u2019t had a proper date in a while since we had our baby, so the Book Fair was perfect timing. Plus, we wanted to discover new books and get inspired!\u201d<\/p>\n

What she got at the fair: <\/b>\u201cI got a few things at the fair! First, Fruit Salad by Chiara Armellini, it\u2019s such a funny flip-book! I bought it with my baby in mind, but honestly, I\u2019m enjoying it too! We can invent our own imaginary fruits with silly names just by flipping the pages, and the illustrations are adorable. I also picked up a letter pack from Rambutan for a good friend who loves writing letters, and a little notebook for myself because I can never resist collecting notebooks!\u201d<\/p>\n

What brought him to SGABF:<\/b> \u201cIt was actually my first time at the Singapore Art Book Fair. To be honest, it doubled as a little date night for me and my wife and we thought, why not drop by? It\u2019s always been on my must-go list since my NAFA days, but I never had the chance to attend until now.\u201d<\/p>\n

What he got at the fair:<\/b> \u201cI ended up getting three things. Ironically, the first wasn\u2019t even a book: a football jersey by @halftime.speech. I\u2019m a Chelsea fan, and I couldn\u2019t resist this spoof Chelsea kit where the emblem was replaced with the logo of the band Blur. I also picked up a Zinedine Zidane air freshener by them, and lastly, an upcycled notebook by Holycrap x OFFCUT. I\u2019ve always admired Holycrap\u2019s work, so when I saw a notebook made from remnant waste and discarded scraps from their book Blood, Sweat & Tears<\/i>, I had to get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
