{"id":10114,"date":"2025-11-09T12:19:31","date_gmt":"2025-11-09T04:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=10114"},"modified":"2025-11-09T12:19:31","modified_gmt":"2025-11-09T04:19:31","slug":"losing-tampines-and-punggol-at-ge2025-would-have-sent-serious-and-far-reaching-message-pm-wong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=10114","title":{"rendered":"Losing Tampines and Punggol at GE2025 would have sent \u2018serious and far-reaching message\u2019: PM Wong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 Losing Tampines and Punggol GRCs would have sent a \u201cserious and far-reaching\u201d message to the world watching the May 2025 General Election, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Nov 9.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Instead,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-pap-gets-65-57-per-cent-of-votes-in-landslide-win?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\"> the PAP\u2019s win of 65.57 per cent of the national vote<\/p>\n<p><\/a> showed that Singaporeans take elections seriously and understand what is at stake, he added, describing the results as a strong mandate but \u201cnot a landslide\u201d victory for the ruling party.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong, in the first party convention since GE2025, was reflecting on the polls where the PAP won closely-fought contests in these two constituencies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Losing Tampines would have suggested that the Workers\u2019 Party\u2019s \u201ccalculated appeal\u201d to Malay\/Muslim voters was effective, and would have encouraged other political parties to do the same, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">That would harm social cohesion and lead to a divided Singapore, he told 1,800 PAP activists at the biennial convention held at the Singapore Expo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">If Punggol had gone to the WP, it would have sent the wrong message as well, said PM Wong, who is party secretary-general. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The loss would have conveyed that voters did not care about the proven abilities and steady leadership of an experienced minister like Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSingapore would have lost our very capable Taskforce Man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Tampines GRC, the PAP team led by Minister for Social and Family Development Masagos Zulkifli beat a team led by WP vice-chair and former Aljunied MP Faisal Manap <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-pap-retains-tampines-grc-in-4-way-fight-wins-tampines-changkat-smc?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">with about 52 per cent of the vote,<\/p>\n<p><\/a> producing the second-closest contest of the election. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The contest produced controversy as the WP\u2019s campaign there attracted endorsement from various parties, including foreign politicians, urging Singaporeans to vote on racial and religious lines. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In an October ministerial statement, Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam said the Malay\/Muslim vote in particular was being targeted, taking issue with the speed and substance of WP\u2019s rejection of such endorsements. WP chief Pritam Singh rejected some of Mr Shanmugam\u2019s statements, but later acknowledged that his party could have been clearer in its rejection during the election. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In Punggol \u2013 a newly carved out GRC \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/politics\/ge2025-results-task-force-man-gan-leads-pap-to-win-in-punggol-grc?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">DPM Gan anchored the PAP team that ran against a WP team<\/p>\n<p><\/a> led by senior counsel Harpreet Singh, seen by many before the election as the opposition party\u2019s \u2018star catch\u2019, and three other first-time candidates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PAP won that contest with 55 per cent of the vote. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0tBxrjkeMjw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0tBxrjkeMjw<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said he especially grateful to voters in these two GRCs for trusting him and his team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The \u201cstrong mandate\u201d for the PAP sent a clear message to the world \u2013 that Singaporeans do not take chances with the future or \u201cgamble with what we\u2019ve built together,\u201d said PM Wong.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThat we will not be swayed by populist appeals or racially-tinged appeals,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added that now when he speaks to foreign leaders, he does so with a \u201cquiet confidence\u201d, because he knows that he speaks on behalf of a \u201cclear-eyed and united people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI speak on behalf of Singaporeans who stand for stability, progress and unity. Singaporeans who stand with the PAP because we have always stood with them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong also reflected on the polls \u2013 his first as leader of the PAP since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/pm-wong-named-secretary-general-of-pap?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">taking over from Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong as party chief in Dec 2024,<\/p>\n<p><\/a> after the party\u2019s internal leadership election that year. Earlier in May 2024, he had been sworn in as prime minister \u2013 also taking over from SM Lee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong said he knew it was important that he and his team sought a \u201cfresh mandate\u201d from Singaporeans to lead and take the country forward<!-- --> in \u201cthis changed world\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">It was a hard-fought battle, and the party went into the election knowing that it would not be an easy fight, he noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some party members and friends sent him messages to prepare for the worst \u2013 including predictions of a lower vote share as he was a new prime minister, the loss of a few single seats or even one or two more GRCs, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSo I was mentally prepared for all outcomes. When the results came out, the same people who had messaged me earlier said to me: \u2018sorry we should have more confidence in you!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"landscape inline-media-wrapper\" data-testid=\"inline-media-test-id\">\n<div class=\"flex flex-col items-start relative w-fit\"><picture><source media=\"(max-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/3f745d193fd5db35973ac51748e4f84cf20f52205b31b40ab6bdcf9294a4cbec?w=480\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 720px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/3f745d193fd5db35973ac51748e4f84cf20f52205b31b40ab6bdcf9294a4cbec?w=720\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 721px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/3f745d193fd5db35973ac51748e4f84cf20f52205b31b40ab6bdcf9294a4cbec?w=900\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/straitstimes\/3f745d193fd5db35973ac51748e4f84cf20f52205b31b40ab6bdcf9294a4cbec\" alt=\"\" class=\"aspect-landscape flex items-start shrink-0 object-cover landscape article-landscape mobile:w-screen tablet:w-auto\" data-testid=\"image-test-id\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/picture><\/div><figcaption class=\"mobile:mx-16 tablet:mx-00 flex flex-col gap-08 py-16 desktop:pb-24\">\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-secondary\" data-testid=\"inline-media-caption-test-id\">PM Lawrence Wong (front row, second from left) and PAP\u2019s 38th CEC members attending PAP Awards and Convention 2025 on Nov 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-eyebrow-baseline-regular text-placeholder\" data-testid=\"inline-media-credit-test-id\">ST PHOTO: LIM YAOHUI<\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But he told them<!-- --> there was no need to apologise and<!-- --> it was right to sound a note of caution, as one can never be certain of the outcome of an election until the votes are counted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At the time, the global issue of cost-of-living pressures were on many Singaporeans\u2019 minds, and the Opposition worked up anxiety and frustration in Singaporeans and tried to pin the blame on the PAP, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While Singaporeans appreciated the Government\u2019s support packages and said that the PAP had done well, they also wanted more Opposition voices to keep the party in check, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWe took that seriously, and went to the ground to convince Singaporeans \u2013 with our record, our sincerity and our plans for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some had predicted that the uncertain external environment \u2013 economic uncertainty due in part to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/united-states\/trumps-kind-tariffs-harshest-burden-falls-on-asia?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">widespread tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump in April,<\/p>\n<p><\/a> a month before GE2025 \u2013 would bring about a \u201cflight to safety\u201d, said PM Wong. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But he took no comfort in this prediction, PM Wong said, as this did not happen during the last general election held during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Instead, the opposite happened. The PAP\u2019s vote share fell, and the Opposition doubled its seats in Parliament, he noted. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cSo I took nothing for granted.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">GE2025 turned out to be a tough, intense fight, he said, and the PAP made many tactical changes to the line-up right up to Nomination Day, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cFor nine days straight, our candidates and activists walked the ground, rallied supporters and met residents across the island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The party also stayed vigilant against attempts \u2013 both internal and external \u2013 to fan racial and religious sentiments for political gain, and u<!-- -->p until the last day of campaigning key constituencies were still \u201ctoo close to call,\u201d PM Wong said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">While some characterised the eventual result as a landslide victory, PM Wong said he holds a different view.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cJust a small swing against the PAP and the results would have been very different. And if that had happened, the mood at today\u2019s party convention would be very different,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He has therefore come out of the election with an \u201coverwhelming sense of humility and gratitude,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Humility because elections remind in no uncertain terms that power ultimately lies with the people, he said. <!-- -->In the end, Singaporeans decide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He added: \u2018Always remember comrades, a strong mandate given by the people today can swiftly be taken away tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He highlighted the importance of groundwork, saying that the election\u2019s results were also because the PAP\u2019s candidates, activists and volunteers worked very hard on the ground, PM Wong said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Voters care about both national and municipal issues, but above all about the candidate \u2013 whether he or she can bond and connect with them, get things done and improve their lives, PM Wong said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Across the island, PAP MPs and their teams \u201cmade all the difference,\u201d not just during the nine days of hustings but over five years of \u201chard and patient work,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Some had tougher fights than others, but never gave up.<!-- --> They showed conviction, courage and steel, and fought hard for every vote, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cYou stood your ground, and you stood tall \u2013 well done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He thanked the party\u2019s activists, adding that much of their work is unseen by the public. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">But they are the party\u2019s \u201cunsung heroes\u201d and its \u201cheart and soul\u201d, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">PM Wong thanked in particular the PAP candidates who stood in the WP-held wards of Aljunied, Hougang and Sengkang. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">They had the toughest mission but never wavered, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAll in all comrades, this has been a tough but deeply rewarding campaign,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PAP has done well in the election and it has given the party \u201ca good base to work from,\u201d PM Wong said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Urging the party to \u201cmake the most of this opportunity,\u201d he warned that the next election will be even tougher.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Singaporeans will have high expectations and exacting standards, and will judge the part not just by what it says but its actions. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThey will ask, have you delivered on your promises?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The PAP must \u201chunker down\u201d and get the work done, and well, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Because <!-- -->when the next election comes, whether in 2030 or earlier, the party must be ready to face Singaporeans with \u201cconfidence and conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The party will be able
