{"id":10037,"date":"2025-11-09T05:29:32","date_gmt":"2025-11-08T21:29:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=10037"},"modified":"2025-11-09T05:29:32","modified_gmt":"2025-11-08T21:29:32","slug":"from-local-to-global-stage-how-one-young-mans-focus-on-sustainability-led-him-to-cop30","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sgbuzz.com\/?p=10037","title":{"rendered":"From local to global stage: How one young man\u2019s focus on sustainability led him to COP30"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE \u2013 <!-- -->In August 2022, Mr Safafisalam Bohari Jaon quit his job in the insurance industry amid the Covid-19 pandemic, with just a dream to help communities vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Then 26, he had been inspired by <!-- -->one of the projects he worked<!-- --> <!-- -->on to raise health literacy among Vietnamese women to find a career that goes beyond the \u201ctypical profit-making kind of metrics\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cUnfortunately, my community \u2013 the Malay\/Muslim community \u2013 is disproportionately impacted by <!-- -->climate change<!-- -->,\u201d said Mr Safafisalam, who is now an economics and social impact consultant. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cWhen you talk about rising heat levels, they particularly affect those living in rental flats and delivery riders, quite a number of whom are Malay\/Muslim.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He managed to<!-- --> <!-- -->land a strategy consultant role by<!-- --> December that year<!-- -->, and three years later, the 29-year-old is taking his aspirations to new heights as he leads a group<!-- --> <!-- -->of youth delegates<!-- --> <!-- -->from Singapore during<!-- --> <!-- -->the first week of the UN climate meeting held in Belem, Brazil, the gateway to the Amazon jungle \u2013 the world\u2019s biggest tropical rainforest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Diplomats, companies and activists from nearly 200 countries are expected to attend the 30th annual meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, more commonly known as COP30. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Outside<!-- --> <!-- -->the negotiation rooms, Mr Safafisalam sees an important role for the youth at the COP30 pavilions, where countries, organisations and interest groups host their own events during the conference, slated to run from Nov 10 to 21.<!-- --> <!-- -->Singapore\u2019s<!-- --> team of 12 comprises university students and working professionals passionate about climate action.<!-- --> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cThere\u2019s definitely the expectation that they will bring back the best practices, whether it\u2019s technology or how people are solving <!-- -->problems<!-- -->; but also narratives, which perhaps they wouldn\u2019t have known of before going to COP30,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAs they get more cognisant about these issues, they could realise that there are real things that everyday Singaporeans can work towards beyond relying on the Government to negotiate for carbon markets, implementation agreements and other financial instruments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The engineering systems and design graduate\u2019s own experience as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/20-youth-heading-to-cop28-climate-talks-under-govt-initiative-to-groom-sustainability-leaders?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">inaugural cohort of the Government\u2019s youth delegates<\/p>\n<p><\/a> in 2023 at COP28 in Dubai has influenced his focus on closing the \u201cbig gap\u201d in green skills between students he mentors as a volunteer and the<!-- --> <!-- -->rapidly progressing international climate policies <!-- -->and sustainabili<!-- -->ty practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">At a time when the COP30 process has come under fire for its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/europe\/hotel-prices-make-countries-consider-skipping-cop30-climate-summit?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">high costs and accommodation issues<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, he believes that this<!-- --> <!-- -->multilateral, in-person meeting remains the most effective forum<!-- --> <!-- -->for countries to have discussions. Its format allows for spontaneous conversations that extend beyond what massive virtual calls can achieve.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Addressing the scepticism labelling<!-- --> <!-- -->such meetings as \u201call talk, no action\u201d, he believes that COP goes beyond international decisions undertaken. Its value lies in bringing countries<!-- --> <!-- -->together, through the negotiations, mixers and other events, which can lead to bilateral partnerships.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Still, the accommodation and logistics constraints have meant some scaling back. The Singapore Government will be sending a smaller delegation to Belem<!-- --> <!-- -->in 2025<!-- -->.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">A<!-- --> <!-- -->Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment spokeswoman said that a total of <!-- -->10 young people from<!-- --> the current Climate Youth Development Programme\u00a0cohort will take part, compared with the usual 20. They will be led by Mr Safafisalam in the first week, and science teacher-turned-content creator Kong Man Jing in the second week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">The spokeswoman said the ministry opted to continue sending youth delegates to COP because the experience offers an invaluable platform to deepen their understanding of international climate issues, build networks with like-minded peers globally, and strengthen their leadership potential in advancing<!-- --> <!-- -->sustainability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cApart from participating in some of the meetings, events at the Singapore Pavilion and interacting with youth from other countries, our youth will also have an opportunity to interact with local communities in Brazil to learn first-hand about the impacts of climate change,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Mr Safafisalam<!-- --> <!-- -->will closely monitor discussions on<!-- --> <!-- -->climate finance, which is high on the agenda for COP30.<!-- --> <!-- -->Participants are expected to deliberate on strategies to raise the current<!-- --> <!-- -->commitment of US$300 billion (S$390 billion) for climate action in developing countries to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/un-roadmap-seeks-to-crack-1-7-trillion-climate-finance-puzzle?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">a target of US$1.3 trillion.<\/p>\n<p><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Of interest, for him, is how funding can be raised through a pay-for-success model, which Brazil is mooting in the form of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/world\/world-leaders-launch-fund-to-save-forests-get-first-6-5-billion?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular inline\" data-testid=\"paragraph-test-id\">Tropical Forests Forever Facility<\/p>\n<p><\/a>, where countries are paid for forests that they maintain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said: \u201cConsidering this<!-- --> <!-- -->from a political level, if <!-- -->capital flows ca<!-- -->n represent what people truly value, and we can get people to value equity, justice and distribution, then I think that can be a very powerful tool \u2013 shifting away from<!-- --> <!-- -->seeing money as inherently evil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">On a personal level, Mr Safafisalam sees sustainability as an existential issue for the planet. <\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">He said: \u201cAt the end of the day, I feel a connection with people who are affected by climate change and all these inequity issues that resonate with me, rather than (issues about)<!-- --> <!-- -->plants and animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cI think when we frame it like that <!-- -->\u2013 <!-- -->how the planet sustains all of us and recognise that some are affected by climate change more than others \u2013 and reflecting on our inherent sense of justice, a more natural connection emerges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"responsive-iframe-base podcast aspect-landscape podcast-embed\" title=\"podcast embed\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/omny.fm\/shows\/green-pulse-1\/playlists\/green-pulse\/embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"accelerometer;falseclipboard-write;
